Social media videos are becoming increasingly more popular by the day, particularly on mobile. According to statistics on social media usage, the amount of time people spent watching Facebook Live every day has gone up by four times and by 80 percent on Instagram videos in the past year.
Creating compelling social media videos, on the other hand, might be much more difficult than writing a blog post or designing a picture. Facebook advises producing a video that lasts approximately 15 seconds to produce an interesting social media video. Isn't it simple enough? But where do you even begin?
Well, it isn’t as difficult as it might have been led to imagine. Here are some guidelines on how you can create effective short videos for social media, anything from a few seconds to a few minutes, easily.
1: Generate Ideas for your video
Obviously, the first step in making a video for social media has to be generating a good video idea that you can make. It is a time to brainstorm ideas for your videos. You can also generate such ideas by looking at your blog posts if you do write blogs as they can be a well of content ideas as you look to such contents that seem to have been well received by your audience. These can be good ideas for your videos.
You can also look at top blog posts, study the most shared blog posts or contents, take a look at popular video posts from similar brands, or use Google Analytics to find top posts and find a bearing for your video contents.
2: Plan
It is often like gambling if we expect to be able to make interesting and engaging videos without planning what we want to do and how we should do it. That is leaving everything to chance.
Effective social media videos are not to be left to luck. You have to work out a plan to make videos that match your objective. Plan from what kind of video you want to make to what you would need to accomplish it should be well thought out.
3: Capture attention early
The most-watched videos on social media are set to auto-play on their platforms. If you can capture your audiences’ attention within the first few seconds of your video; then, you are likely to be able to have a better chance of stopping a viewer from scrolling past your video as they go through their feed. For instance, Facebook's advice is that you start your video with your most captivating elements, before infusing your brand message and identity early and using engaging post copy.
4: Keep your message simple
If your video idea is interesting and you do manage to capture the attention of your viewer; it all comes to nothing if the message of the post is lost on the viewer. “What vital message do I want to convey in this video?” ask yourself. The answer to that question should serve as a guide for you while you create the video.
5: Design for sound off
According to Facebook, people watch mobile videos everywhere; at home, work, during their commute, etc. more often than not, people prefer to play such videos without sound, perhaps so that they do not disturb others or attract unnecessary attention to themselves especially in places where it might not be too appropriate to watch such videos with their sound on. You can add captions or text to tell your story visually.
6: Experiment with the size
Statistically, more than 50 percent of videos created these days are played on mobile devices. You should experiment with size to see which video size your viewers react to better. For instance, square and vertical videos use up more screen space than landscape videos when the phone is held vertically. In some experiments, it was discovered that square videos performed much better than landscape videos on Facebook,
Instagram, and Twitter in terms of average engagement and views. This is probably because people don’t really like to start flipping their phone or searching for the ‘auto rotate’ button to make it switch automatically.
