For most people, the only way we seem to view a ship is as a means of transportation for cargo and other kinds of goods. In the fast-paced life of today’s world, hardly anyone considers a ship as their preferred choice of transportation. Even if you are one of those who own a yacht, still, it would be more of a form of pleasure than a regular mode of transportation than anything else.
Yachts and cruise ships are luxury transportation that seems to be the exclusive preserve of the very rich. With Yachts and cruise ships costing colossal sums of money, it is evident that they were never meant to be used as regular modes of transportation. And since yachts are more individually owned, cruise ships offer those who do not have the financial capacities to own or sail on yachts and experience the luxury associated with them, a measure of the same luxury life that owners of yachts do for a tiny fraction of the cost of owning them.
Thus, over 13 million people sail on a cruise ship annually according to some reports for different reasons such as for honeymoons, wedding anniversaries, birthday celebrations, corporate retreats, or just for just holidays. But much like the other forms of transportation, cruise ships costs vary according to the luxury level of the cruise.
But no cruise ship is equal to the “Symphony of the Seas” either in sheer size or luxury.
The Symphony of the Seas, also proudly referred to as the ‘Billion Pound Cruise’ because it was built at the cost of £1 Billion, was built in 2018 as the world’s largest cruise ship, 1,188 feet longer than ‘The Shard’.
It has 18 decks that stand over 238 feet in height (taller than Nelson’s Column), with 6 engines – each the size of a double-decker bus and with a combined capacity totaling 128,000 horsepower, bringing the total weight of the ship to a whopping 228,000 tonnes.
This feat of engineering wonders is built with a park that has 20,700 tropical plants and 52 trees.
The Symphony has 2,200 crew members who service a cruise population of 6,680 guests accommodated in 2,759 Staterooms.
The cruise’s kitchen produces 40,000 meals per day with a shopping list bill of just under 1 million dollars per week.
For activities aboard the Symphony; the cruise ship has a slide that is 10 decks high at over 150 feet above sea level, two 43 feet signature climbing walls, a zipline, 9 decks above a Carousel that tilts 5 degrees in any direction to counter choppy conditions at sea.
The centerpiece of a billion-pound cruise ship is the Promenade that spans 2 decks, housing shops, restaurants, and bars. The Symphony houses a piece of engineering wonder which is the first elevating bar known as ‘The Rising Tide’.
Like anything luxurious, the Symphony has an exclusive VIP butler service known as ‘Royal Genie’ catering for the luxury suites on the ship called the ‘Royal Loft Suites’ which accommodates 6 guests with each suite having 2bedrooms, a dining area complete with its own Grand piano. This VIP service comes for £75,000 for 7 nights.
The Royal Genie also provides its services to another premium accommodation on the cruise known as the ‘Ultimate Family Suites’. This accommodation spans over 2 decks and comes with its very own slide.
The Food and Beverage (F&B) department ensures that the 6,680 guests are well catered for with 530 waiters, 99 cleaners, and 257 chefs who produce 40,000 meals per day to 5,200 guests at one seating.
The bar has two robotic barmen which took over 41,600 hours to create and can serve on average, over 1,000 drinks each. This is in addition to the over 35,000 cans and bottles of beer that are consumed every 7 days on the cruise, besides numerous bottles of champagne.
The Symphony of the Seas is not just a luxury cruise ship; it is the epitome of a luxury cruise ship and a statement of class and affluence that has made the ship not a form of transport, but ‘the destination’ of luxury seekers and holidaymakers.
